Last night I caught a remarkable, mostly improvised performance by reedists Tobias Delius and Ab Baars here in Berlin within the cozy confines of KM28. The musicians are probably best known as long-time members of the ICP Orchestra, where they have built an astonishing rapport over decades of work together and the set revealed an almost telepathic degree of communication. Their performance ended with a gorgeous reading of ‘De Sprong, O Romantiek der Hazen’, a ballad by ICP co-founder Misha Mengelberg, that delivered velvety splendor, but the rest of the music was all made up on the spot.

Ensemble Klang’s The Big Loud Thing In honor of the 50th anniversary of the iconic Orkest De Volharding, the street orchestra of Louis Andriessen and Willem Breuker, Ensemble Klang presents a series of free pop-up concerts in which the music of De Volharding is central. Free-thinking, colorful and cooperative, De Volharding’s saxophones, brass instruments and rhythm section effortlessly combine contemporary music with jazz, pop and avant-garde. De Volharding is an icon in Dutch ensemble culture, it stood at the cradle of hundreds of works by leading composers, fascinates the public to this day and is a great source of inspiration for the next generation of artists.

Saxofonist Jasper Blom geniet niet alleen een aanzienlijke reputatie als musicus en bandleider maar ook als docent. Samen met een drietal leerlingen – trompettist Ian Cleaver, contrabassist Thomas Pol en drummer Wouter Kühne – trad hij regelmatig op in café Zilt, gelegen aan de Amsterdamse Zeedijk. ZILT werd geboren in een Amsterdams whiskeycafé op de Zeedijk. Tenorsaxofonist Jasper Blom en trompettist Ian Cleaver, respectievelijk docent en leerling, legden zich daar wekelijks toe op stukken van Misha Mengelberg en Duke Ellington: jazzlegendes uit verschillende tijdperken met een vergelijkbaar onbevangen en speels karakter. ZILT verweeft hun composities met elkaar door middel van improvisatie. Dit concert (vrijdag 2 september 2022) staat in het teken van het nieuwe album van ZILT op Just Listen Records.

Cadence Media presents a 14 minute doc featuring memories about Misha from ICP members: Wolter Weirbos, Ernst Glerum, Ab Baars, Mary Oliver, Michael Moore. Recorded on one day in February 2012 at the Bimhuis Concert venue in Amsterdam.

Charismatic, quirky, unique – that’s what we say about percussionist Han Bennink (1942), who celebrates his eightieth birthday this year. He surely deserves national treasure status by now because he can look back on an incredible career in which he played all kinds of jazz without ever making concessions. Bennink’s work with the Instant Composers Pool is still a jewel in his crown 55 years on.

De Theaterweide staat erom bekend dat we de dag op een speciale manier openen. In dit uitzonderlijke concert slaat het internationaal geroemde Instant Composers Pool Orchestra de handen ineen met De Waterlandse Harmonie uit Ransdorp.

In Een ode aan Misha Mengelberg vieren drie generaties jazzmusici van Nederlandse bodem de humor, anarchie en pakkende thema’s van Misha (in 1935 geboren in Kyiv). In een vrolijke chaos wordt schijnbaar achteloos gespeeld in wisselende combinaties. Is drie drummers niet wat overbezet op een potentieel van een klein dozijn? Deze volstrekt overbodige vraag hoeft dan ook niet te worden beantwoord. Nestor Han Bennink (80!) rapt. Een totaalbeleving/happening voor geest en gehoor.
